me and music

i've spent basically my whole life making, enjoying, and using music! i probably mentioned somehwere else on here that i've been dancing for a very long time. for like actual instruments, i've been playing guitar since the end of 2021 and piano from maybea little before i started dancing. i also play the uke but it's the easiest instrument actually ever so i'm not counting it. but music's been a really important part of my life, especially when u add in the fact that i enjoy singing! i'm like. rly mediocre, but its really really fun so i still do it!

my family's also passed on a bunch of their music taste to me, esp my dad and my sister. i do get a little bit of country and just general oldies from my mom though (shoutout dolly parton and fleetwood mac). also shoutout to my dad for the most amazing 60s, 70s, and 80s rock and alt. depeche mode, daryl hall+john oats, cake, and so much more are allll him. my sister also gives me an insane amout of music literally by proximity so that's really cool too. love her! literally would never have heard of noah kahan without her.

music

igor - tyler the creator

favorite tracks

a boy is a gun, i think, what's good

thoughts

igor was my intro to tyler the creator and still one of my favorite albums. i have the record on vinyl! passionate unique sound, i love the synth, higher pitched vocals, drums, leitmotifs. each track functions as a standalone but they kind of meld into eachother when you listen to the album in order. like one overarching story. fantastic album

stick season (we'll all be here forever) - noah kahan

favorite tracks (too many)

no complaints, paul revere, call your mom, dial drunk, new perspective

thoughts

i LOVE this album and i love my sister for introducing me to it. his lyricism and references to addiction are so raw and real in every song. no complaints makes me cryyy bruh. tbh the kind of album i would play fulll blast and scream to w the windows open if i had a car. v dramatic. the guitar is usually the main/one of the only instruments. makes it fun and easy to play!

louder than bombs - the smiths

favorite tracks

unloveable, back to the old house, william it was really nothing, please please please let me get what i want

thoughts

i'm such a huge fan of the smiths cause of my dad but i HAD to choose this album just bc of the amount of absolutely fantastic songs on it. i love when the smiths lyrics are suicidal and depressed and then the tune is like the most. upbeat thing uve ever heard. it's actually crazy but it works. the guitar in this album is so gorgeous. the lyrics are gorgeous. love this album

h2o - daryll hall and john oats

favorite tracks

maneater (duh), art of heartbreak, one on one

thoughts

my mom and dad are HUGE daryll hall and john oats fans. rich girl is one of my fav songs of all time tbh. such a classic oldie album (my dad would kill me for calling it old - shh)! i have this one on vinyl. i don't listen to it as much as i should but mann it is such a good album to just slap on in the background of literally anything. 80s music rules

twin fantasy - car seat headrest

favorite tracks

nervous young inhumans, famous prophets(stars), cute thing

thoughts

i love the way leitmotifs are used in this album. the "keep smoking, i love you, but i dont wanna die" in high to death vs "stop smoking we love you, and we dont want you to die" is SO jarring to the listener. also in high to death the "i cant turn this thing off it keeps following me" etc etc appears as almost a direct quote in overexposed (enjoy). also the "the ocean washed over your grave" in beach life-in-death corresponds with the "the ocean washed over/open your grave" in famous prophets (stars). i could go on and on about csh and leitmotifs but i just wanted to highlight it in this! fantastic album

ok computer - radiohead

favorite tracks

karma police, the tourist, no surprises

thoughts

radiohead is deeply unsettling sometimes. fitter, happier scares me too much to listen to. thom yorke is a musical genius. this album also reminds me a lot of my fav book fahrenheit 451 idk why. the instrumental sounds almost mechanical, juxtaposing yorkes soulful voice. i haven't looked into the lyrics as much as i should but i can only imagine the amount of figurative meaning and language hidden within each song. this album is a work of art

teens of denial - car seat headrest

favorite tracks

destroyed by hippie powers, drunk drivers/killer whales, (joe gets kicked out of school for using) drugs with friends (but says this isn't a problem)

thoughts

car seat headrest titles are so interesting in the best way ever. i turn on this album every once and a while when i cry. destroyed by hippie powers does not fail to release the floodworks for me and i don't even think i could tell you why. the first verse of that song is genuinely so beautiful. i can't ever replicate it when i try to play it on guitar. will toledo's voice isn't objectively beautiful, but it matches the style of the music perfectly. such a beautiful album

AM - arctic monkeys

favorite tracks

arabella, snap out of it, fireside

thoughts

i actually only got into arctic monkeys because it was a girl i liked's favorite artist. don't like her anymore but arctic monkeys r timeless! this is just such a classic album i couldn't not add it. arctic monkeys' rock sound is absolutely fantastic and their riffs are iconic throughout the world of music. alex turner's sometimes talk-singing, sometimes singing, drawly kind of voice is perfect with the overdrive-heavy guitar and in-your-face drums.

being so normal - peach pit

favorite tracks

being so normal, alrighty aphrodite, tommy's party

thoughts

my cousin actually first introduced me to peach pit! their songs were some of the first songs i ever learned on guitar (especially alrighty aphrodite! that random c minor bar chord in the middle took me OUT when i was first learning). the reverb on their guitar gives this whole album a super dreamy feel. to me this felt like one of their calmer, more soulful albums, which i love about it. the stories they tell through their lyricism are insanely amazing for the 3 minute medium they have to tell it with (shoutout tommy's party). love this album

the night in question: french exit outtakes - tv girl

favorite tracks

it almost worked, valerie, sleeping with the enemy

thoughts

in my opinion this was tv girl's most creative album. my favorite thing ever that they do is putting little snippets of human dialogue into each song as a motif that shows up throughout it. i think that was most apparent in this album, especially with the desolation tango and stay away (it's like that). tv girl lyrics are so beautiful and go so well with his almost deadpan voice and unique percussion. LOVE

gemini rights - steve lacy

favorite tracks

helmet, mercury, buttons, bad habit (duh)

thoughts

bad habit was my 2023 top song! i actually love this album so much. steve lacy songs are so smooth and interesting sounding and his voice is incredible. i love the kindof mariachi-esque feel in mercury. steve lacy is just such a genius i love this album

sunburn - dominic fike

favorite tracks

frisky, mama's boy, what kinda woman, think fast

thoughts

this album is so gorgeous tbh. couldn't stop listening to it jan and feb 2024. dominic fike combines rap with just such beautiful instrumental and insanely impressive guitar. would def play in the car very loud. shoutout to my sister for introducing me to this album! i love dominic fike so much

currents - tame impala

favorite tracks

thoughts

invitation to her's - her's

favourite worst nightmare - arctic monkeys

summer's over - jordana, tv girl

you and your friends - peach pit

laurel hell - mitski

what could possibly go wrong - dominic fike
